Bridgton Hospital Offers Osteoporosis Screening and Treatment

Osteoporosis, a disease marked by the gradual weakening of the bones, can rob women and men alike of mobility and independence. But the disease's damaging effects are preventable.

Bridgton Hospital, as part of Central Maine Medical Center, provides state-of-the-art bone density screening services.
The screening is painless and takes less than 15 minutes to complete. Low dose X-rays of the lower back and one hip are taken. A physician specializing in osteoporosis reviews the scan and sends the findings to the patient's referring physician.

The National Osteoporosis Foundation generally recommends bone density scans for all women aged 65 and older, postmenopausal women who break a bone, and postmenopausal women with a known risk factor, such as having a small frame or a parent or sibling with the disease.
